Prevention Tips
Waterbugs congregate outdoors in moist, shady hiding places
where food and water is readily available. They are also found in
woodpiles, mulch, lawns and hollow trees. Waterbugs will randomly
enter the home seeking food or water or when weather conditions are
extremely wet and cold.
Indoors, infestations can be reduced with good sanitation,
eliminating food sources and keeping food in sealed containers,
repairing water leaks, and sealing cracks and crevices.
Outdoors, keeping mulch levels to a minimum next to the house,
eliminating standing water, trimming shrubs around the house,
sealing exterior entry points such as cracks and crevices with a
waterproof silicone caulking, repairing broken screens, sealing
openings around water pipes, and eliminating wood piles next to the
house will all help in keeping these pests from entering your home.
Treatment of harborage areas with outdoor insecticides labeled for
this use can help reduce waterbug infestations before they seek
shelter inside the home.
